Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is determined to sign Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The Uruguayan international has been rock-solid for Atletico in the last few years, and his fine form at the back this season has played a major role in helping the Spanish outfit to within inches of securing the title in La Liga. Chelsea were linked with Godin last summer, though he eventually signed a new contract with Atletico in November, committing his future to the club until 2018, though this hasn’t put off City pursuing him this year. Pellegrini is known to be unhappy with his current options at the back, with Martin Demichelis looking like a poor signing last season, while senior figures such as Vincent Kompany have also been off form and could even be sold as Barcelona reportedly show an interest. Godin could be a big improvement for City if they do manage to sign him, though it would likely take a big-money bid to convince Atletico to sell one of their most important players.
The 28-year-old is the latest of many of the club’s big names to be linked with an exit this summer, with star striker Diego Costa also attracting plenty of attention, as well as promising young playmaker Koke.
