This week, Manchester proved to everyone in world football that the city is the real home of football. Both teams have qualified for the biggest finals in European Football, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.
Manchester United have always been considered one of the top teams in world football, especially over the last few decades when under Alex Ferguson the team became the most successful teams in Europe. However, the other team in the city, Manchester City are fast becoming one of the best teams in World Football. With Pep Guardiola, they have become a dominant force in the Premier League, looking to secure the title this weekend.
The only other city in Europe with two dominant teams in the past 20 years is Madrid.
Manchester City dominated the second leg against PSG to reach the final of this season’s UEFA Champions League in Istanbul. They reached the final after overcoming a strong Paris Saint-Germain team in a 2-0 victory. With the first leg win in the bag, the were able to sit back and work on the counter attack with patience. Kevin De Bruyne became the striker and Riyad Mahrez scored the goals.
Manchester City will play London side Chelsea FC.
The Red Devils, Manchester United qualified for the final of the Europa League, even though they did lose to Roma.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team were made to work for their spot in the Europa League final after going through despite losing 3-2 to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.
Man United won the tie 8-5 but the manager will not be happy with the manner in which it was achieved. Edison Cavani was the standout player for the reds in both legs. In the first leg with two goals and two assists in the club’s emphatic 6-2 victory, he also bagged yet another goal on Thursday night to add insult to injury. Cavani showed tremendous composure in the Roma box to finish beautifully into the net from close range. His second goal was a fantastic header from a great Bruno Fernandes cross.
Manchester United will play Villarreal in Poland for the Europa League final.
The UEFA Super Cup could be played with both teams Manchester United v Manchester City in Belfast, what a dream game that would be.
