Southampton, Newcastle United and Stoke City are ready to pounce for Steven Caulker if Cardiff City are relegated, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The Welsh side look among the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League this season after some poor recent form, which has seen them win just twice in their last ten games.
Having won promotion from the Championship last season, there was some expectation that Cardiff could avoid the drop this year with some big-name signings, with Caulker’s arrival from Tottenham Hotspur looking like a real coup for then-manager Malky Mackay.
However, the 22-year-old’s fine performances have not been enough to steer Cardiff away from trouble, and he now looks likely to make a quick exit from the side as a number of bigger clubs show an interest in snapping him up. Liverpool have previously been linked with the England international, though a club insider believes that it is currently Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke who are leading the chase for his signature as the summer transfer window approaches. Caulker certainly looks a Premier League player, and many were surprised when Tottenham allowed him to leave the club last summer. It seems likely that interest in the player will continue to grow if Cardiff are confirmed as going down next season.
