Everton could look to sign former Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker if his current club Cardiff City are relegated this season, it has emerged.
The 22-year-old has been one of the more impressive performers for the struggling Welsh side this season, after making an 8million move to the club from Tottenham last summer.
The England international had previously impressed in a loan spell at Swansea City, and it was a surprise for some when he wasn’t given more of an opportunity to impress at White Hart Lane. Still, he could find himself back at a bigger club next season, as FootballDirectNews.com understands that Everton would be ready to bid for him if Cardiff go down.
The Toffees could do with extra options in defence, having sold John Heitinga to Fulham in January, and with key centre-back Sylvain Distain now 36 and in need of a long-term replacement. A club source confirmed that the Merseysiders had been looking at Caulker as one of their main targets in that position. Cardiff are currently 19th in the Premier League and have lost seven out of their last ten games, putting them in real danger of dropping to the Championship next season, which would likely see a number of their star players leave.
