Everton hope to lure Derby County midfielder Will Hughes to Goodison Park at the end of the season, [football] direct news understands. The Toffees will lose loanee Gareth Barry upon the conclusion of the current campaign as his temporary stint on Merseyside expires at the end of May. While boss Roberto Martinez is keen to sign Manchester City man Barry on a permanent free transfer deal, he faces stiff competition from clubs across Europe and if the England veteran moves elsewhere, Everton will have a gap to fill in their engine room. A source close to the club told FDN that Martinez feels the range of passing Hughes possesses would fit in well with the style of play he has introduced since succeeding David Moyes in the hotseat last summer. At 18-years-old, the playmaker also has plenty of time to develop and improve, a process Martinez relishes. The asking price for Hughes is likely to depend on the success of Derby’s promotion bid. If the Rams return to the top flight, they are sure to hold out for a larger sum of money.
