Tottenham Hotspur could be in pole position to sign long-term target Alessandro Matri from AC Milan amid reports that Fiorentina are having doubts about making his loan deal permanent.
The striker has scored four goals for the Viola since joining on a temporary basis in January, but has gone off the boil of late and received heavy criticism for his display in the weekend stalemate against Sampdoria. According to Italian source Tutto Mercato Web, Fiorentina had plans to buy the 29-year-old upon the conclusion of the current campaign, but his recent performances have seen their stance change. A source close to Spurs told FootballDirectNews.com that Matri has been on their radar for some time, with technical director Franco Baldini – who oversees player recruitment – keen to flex his muscles again by using his list of Serie A contacts.

Matri has three years remaining on his contract with Milan but is out of favour at the San Siro and is likely to be sold off this summer as head coach Clarence Seedorf embarks on an overhaul of his under-performing squad. Watch Barcelona v Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
