The Spanish playmaker was one of Pochettino’s primary targets when he first joined the club in January 2013 but Verdu instead opted to join Betis from Espanyol in the summer. After a more than disappointing campaign, Betis were relegated from La Liga, finishing bottom of the table which has activated a release clause in his contract which allows the player to leave on a free transfer. Verdu has taken up that option and is now available to discuss terms with any interested suitors, something which is certain to alert Pochettino who knows the player well from their time together at Espanyol. The 31-year-old is now entering the latter stages of his career but still possesses undoubted talent while his experience at the highest level could boost a young Saints team. Verdu only managed to appear in half of Betis’ 19 league matches this season due to injury.
