Southampton could face competition from Wolfsburg for the signing of young left-back Jordan Lukaku, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The Saints are believed to be chasing the 19-year-old, the younger brother of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, as a possible replacement for their own in-demand youngster Luke Shaw, who is being linked with Manchester United.
Shaw’s departure would certainly be a blow for Southampton, though they are already keeping an eye out for new signings in that position, with Lukaku appearing to impress manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The Belgian Under-21 international is currently on loan from Anderlecht at Oostende for the season, but could spark a bidding war this summer as Wolfsburg are also on the lookout for players in that part of the pitch. Like Southampton, the Bundesliga side are expected to receive bids for their promising defender Ricardo Rodriguez, who has been targeted by the likes of Bayern Munich and Chelsea, and they too see Lukaku as a decent option to replace the Swiss full-back. A Saints insider confirmed their interest in Lukaku, but admits they face an uphill battle to sign him with Wolfsburg stepping up their interest.
