Napoli are the latest club to show an interest in unsettled Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The Serie A side are in the market for new signings in the centre of their defence this summer, having been strongly linked with a bid for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen in recent months.
However, Alderweireld’s situation at Atletico has also alerted Napoli boss Rafael Benitez, who may sense an opportunity to land the talented Belgian stopper on the cheap this summer.
The 25-year-old has only been at the Vicente Calderon for one season after joining the club from Ajax, where he had attracted plenty of interest from English clubs such as Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. Following a disappointing time in Spain, in which Alderweireld has struggled to break into Diego Simeone’s starting lineup on a regular basis, the player could now be on his way out of the club, and may jump at the chance to join a top European club such as Napoli.

Manchester United have also been linked with him recently as they eye a replacement for their departing skipper Nemanja Vidic, who is heading to Inter Milan at the end of the season.
