Monaco could look to beat the likes of Liverpool to the signing of Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The big-spending Ligue 1 club are facing the possible departure of key attacker James Rodriguez this summer, with both Manchester City and Real Madrid keen on signing the impressive young Colombian.
Rodriguez was one of several big-name arrivals at Monaco last summer, alongside the likes of Radamel Falcao and Joao Moutinho, and the club’s owner Dmitry Rybolovlev would be looking to bring in further additions of this quality ahead of next season. Shaqiri has been widely regarded as one of the most promising young players in Europe for a few years now, though things have not exactly gone to plan for him at Bayern, where he has struggled to deal with some intense competition for places. With the likes of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and many more ahead of him in the pecking order, the Swiss international may be open to a new challenge, though a Liverpool insider feels the Reds now may miss out on his signature. We looked at him (Shaqiri) in January and it didn’t work out, a club source explained. “If it’s true that Monaco are now interested then they’d be the favourites to get him with the kind of money they can offer. “
