Manchester United could offer Nani a return to his old club as they chase William Carvalho, FootballDirectNews.com understands. An exit from Old Trafford seems likely this summer for the Portuguese winger, who has been largely out of favour under David Moyes this season, despite signing a new long-term contract earlier on in the campaign. Several big clubs have shown an interest in Nani, though it has also been suggested that he would be keen to return to the team he initially left to join United back in 2007, which may now help the Red Devils bring in one of their priority transfer targets for the summer. Carvalho, 22, is one of the most sought-after young players in Europe at the moment, and has seemingly been identified by United as the answer to their problems in midfield, with the likes of Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley not convincing Moyes this season, while Anderson looks likely to leave after moving on loan to Fiorentina in January.

Carvalho has also been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, but the offer of Nani plus cash in return for the player may now see United move into the driving seat in their bid to land him ahead of next season.

My understanding is that we could be making progress on the Carvalho deal, a club source explained. “Nani is happy to go back to Sporting and we hope that will help push the move through. “
