Manchester United are set to step up their efforts for ex-Liverpool defender Gabriel Paletta as they look to fend off interest from Tottenham Hotspur, [football] direct news understands. David Moyes has had the Italian, who recently made his debut for the Azzurri against Spain, watched on several occasions and sees him as a viable option to replace the soon departing Nemanja Vidic, who is joining Inter Milan. The former Everton boss does not think the player’s Liverpool connections will cause problems with United fans as he only made a handful of appearances for the Reds in 2006-07 before moving to Boca Juniors and then Parma. The 28-year-old is understood to be interested in a return to England and, like Moyes, does not think his Liverpool history will be a problem.
