Liverpool could be ready to make Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Schmelzer their number one target at left-back, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The Reds are in the market for a new player in that position with manager Brendan Rodgers seemingly unconvinced by Aly Cissokho as first-choice, with the on-loan Valencia left-back recently losing his place to youngster Jon Flanagan. With Cissokho likely to move elsewhere in the summer, Liverpool are keen to address the left-back slot and buy a specialist in that position, having been linked with the likes of Alberto Moreno and Caner Erkin in recent times.
However, a club insider now believes that Rodgers has identified Schmelzer as his preferred option for that role, with the 26-year-old proving a key performer for Dortmund in recent times.
The German international has been with the club for his entire career so far, but may be one of a number of big names to depart this summer if manager Jurgen Klopp also decides to leave, having been linked with both Arsenal and Barcelona. We think there might be a possibility to sign Schmelzer from Dortmund, an Anfield source explained. “I don’t know the details, but the boss is a fan of his and I’d expect us to make a bid in the coming months. “Liverpool have also been linked with another Dortmund star in Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
