Liverpool hope to strengthen the heart of their defence this summer by luring former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng back to the Premier League, [football] direct news understands. The Germany international, now a regular fixture for European Cup holders and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, endured an injury-hit spell at the Etihad Stadium in the 2010-11 season. He was part of the Blues’ FA Cup-winning squad but was sold weeks later after falling  out of favour under then-boss Roberto Mancini. Boateng was predominantly used as a full-back at City but has since established himself as a top centre-half, and a source close to Anfield told FDN Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is anxious to improve the middle of his backline. The player will still have four years remaining on his contract at the Allianz Arena when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season, but Liverpool will have money to spend if, as expected, they secure Champions League qualification.
