Liverpool stalwart John Aldridge has revealed his relief that referee Howard Webb will not oversee Sunday’s crunch title showdown with Chelsea.Martin Atkinson is to take charge of the eagerly-anticipated game at Anfield, which could see the Reds move eight points clear of Jose Mourinho’s men.Former striker Aldridge has regularly criticised Webb – who officiated in tonight’s Champions League semi-final, first leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich – on social media site Twitter. The ex-Tranmere Rovers manager feels Webb does not deserve to be viewed as England’s leading referee and thinks he makes too many mistakes to be considered an elite performer. He returned to Twitter to share his delight at Atkinson’s appointment for this weekend’s fixture.Aldridge said: “Sunday’s referee is Martin Atkinson. At least no WEBB.”Liverpool are strong favourites to win their first title in 24 years after stringing together 11 consecutive victories and seeing off rivals Manchester City, which ensured their fate would be in their own hands for the run-in.
