Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes Chelsea lack class for the way they have acted this week. Jose Mourinho and his assistant Rui Faria were charged following incidents during the club’s 2-1 home defeat to strugglers Sunderland last week – a result that ended the Portuguese’s astonishing unbeaten 77 home-game run while severely damaging their Premier League title hopes.
Mourinho allegedly made sarcastic comments after the game about Mike Dean’s performance following a late penalty that was converted by Fabio Borini to seal a dramatic win for the Black Cats. The former Real Madrid boss was also involved in ugly scenes when he was forced to restrain his assistant coach Faria, who flew into a blind rage as he menacingly tried to confront Dean, while firing a volley of expletives in his direction. And Thompson thinks the way the club have failed to ban Faria, while giving the impression the actions of the coach and Mourinho were acceptable, shows they think they are above the law. Chelsea lack class and leadership and the way the coach carried on – he should have been told to sit in the stands after that but there he is on the bench a few days later. Do they really think they are bigger than the game? Because that’s how it looks, he told Sky Sports.
