Vermaelen has struggled for playing time this season after niggling injuries and the form of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and reports of a summer exit have loomed large. Manchester City are growing increasingly keen and it is understood that they will attempt to use their recent connections with Arsenal to force a summer move, which will see the defender partnered with his Belgian team-mate Vincent Kompany. The likes of Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy have departed the Emirates for the Etihad stadium in recent seasons and City are convinced they can sign Vermaelen this summer. The 28-year-old made his international debut on 2006, whilst Kompany made his in two years previous but the two have formed a formidable defensive partnership for the national side. And, City are certain that partnering the two next season will rectify several problems this season which has seen them exit from the Champions League.
