Victor Valdes played his final match for FC Barcelona in last night’s league match against Celta Vigo after suffering cruciate ligament damage in his right knee. As a result he will also miss the World Cup where he was tipped by many to start for Spain due to his excellent form and Iker Casillas’ lack of playing time at Real Madrid. However, Spain will now have to look to a new goalkeeper to call up for the World Cup, and the overwhelming majority of fans have voted in favour of Manchester United’s David De Gea to replace Valdes in the squad. Following a poll in Madrid-based newspaper AS, De Gea received 65% of the votes to take Valdes’ World Cup spot. Second was Real Madrid’s number one Diego Lopez with 18% and Espanyol’s Kiko Casilla with 11.5%. De Gea is widely tipped as the future no.1 for La Roja and his recent form would put him in the squad on merit and the display of support from the Spanish faithful is evident of that.
