Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham insists striker Wayne Rooney’s superb goal in the 2-0 win at West Ham United should have been disallowed.
The England international muscled defender James Tomkins off the ball just before unleashing a half-volley from 58 yards which flew past goalkeeper Adrian into the net.
He later added another goal from close range to secure three valuable points for his side and under-pressure manager David Moyes. Sheringham, who won an historic treble with the Red Devils in 1999 and enjoyed five successful years at Old Trafford, echoed Hammers boss Sam Allardyce’s view that the 29-year-old fouled Tomkins in the build-up to the goal.
He told Sky Sports 1 show Goals on Sunday: “First things first I am with Sam, it was a foul. “When a player is about to jump like Tomkins was, it is very easy to knock them off balance and that is exactly what happened. It was a foul, no doubt about it for me. ”Sheringham did, however, reserve praise for the strike itself, adding: “It was a great bit of skill. ”
