Gary Lineker reiterated his belief that Tim Sherwood was wrong to publicly slate his players after Spurs went down 3-1 to Benfica last night in the Europa League.  The former Tottenham striker reacted to Sherwood’s comments after the weekend defeat to Chelsea that some of his players lacked guts and were playing for their futures by saying on Twitter: “There is no quicker way to lose the confidence and trust of your players than to slag them off publicly.

And last night following the Londoners disappointing home defeat in the last 16-tie, Lineker felt his views were vindicated.
The way it’s going Tim Sherwood may need to rely on those he doesn’t feel he can rely on, he wrote.
He then added: “Berating players in public rarely has the desired effect. Plan B required. ” Tottenham suffered their first home defeat in this year’s competition to a polished Portuguese side that have won 21 of their last 23 games dating back to November. Benfica only entered the Europa League after being eliminated from their Champions League group with 10 points, while they were unlucky to lose to Chelsea in last season’s final.
