England legend Gary Lineker has said that, if he was Roy Hodgson, he would take Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez to the World Cup this summer. Rodriguez scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season for Southampton against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon at St Mary’s and earned his first and, so far, only England cap in November in a 2-0 defeat to Chile at Wembley. The 24-year-old has been a shining light in an impressive season for Southampton, who also boast England internationals in Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, with calling for Rodriguez to be included in Hodgson’s 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Former England striker Lineker, who scored 48 goals and earned 80 caps for the Three Lions, has also called for Rodriguez to make Hodgson’s World Cup squad. When asked if he would take the Saints forward to the World Cup on Twitter, Lineker simply replied with “yes”.
