De Gea has been called up to the Spanish national team’s 30-man provisional squad ahead of the World Cup, replacing Valdes as the country’s third choice keeper following the Barcelona star’s injury suffered in March earlier this year. Despite United’s disappointing campaign which saw them finish seventh in the Premier League, de Gea was in fine form for his club. Speaking about the injured Barcelona keeper, de Gea admits he has not yet spoken to him but wished him a speedy recovery.“I have not spoken with Valdes, it’s a gutting injury. I send him from here a hug and I hope he recovers quickly,” he told reporters at La Ciudad del Futbol. De Gea also believes that Spain has the strongest squad going into next month’s tournament, saying: “This national team is the best in the world, I hope that it can revalidate the title.”His spectacular performances between the sticks at Old Trafford handed him the club’s player of the year award and earned him his place in the Spanish national team.
