Chelsea will flex their financial muscle by fighting Liverpool for in-demand Argentine defender Mateo Musacchio. Jose Mourinho has entered the race to land the 23-year-old Villarreal star as he prepares to listen to offers for out of favour defender David Luiz, FootballDirectNews.com has learnt.
Mussacchio has been tracked by Barcelona and Liverpool following his consistent performances this term. The player has made 24 appearances out of the club’s 28 league matches – with the Yellow Submarines having the fifth best defensive record in La Liga, conceding 34 goals. Interest in Musacchio has increased with it well known that he is out of contract in the summer, making him a cheap option. Scouts of Liverpool have attended three of Villarreal’s matches since the turn of the year, though Brendan Rogers will be fearful of Chelsea’s interest after the Anfield club have lost out on other targets to the Blues recently, including Mohamed Salah. For all the attacking impetus, Liverpool have conceded 38 goals, more than any other top-four rival which have included a number of individual mistakes from their centre-backs.
