Fernando Torres has admitted that it will be tough to make Spain’s squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
The Spanish striker has been pivotal in his nation’s three consecutive major tournament successes in the last six years but was not called up to the last squad, leaving his place in doubt. Another poor campaign for the Chelsea striker has not helped either and the emergence of Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa as first choice for Vicente Del Bosque has left many to believe Torres will not get the call.
The 30-year old has revealed the importance of the World Cup and also admitted that he would need to be in form to make the final cut. “The national team is very special for me and the World Cup is not just any tournament,” he told AS. “Those who go must be the best prepared and that’s why you have a coach who picks the squad. The World Cup is just around the corner and those who are in the best form will be the ones to go,” he conceded.
Torres has scored just four goals for Chelsea in the Premier League this season in 23 matches.
