Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, FootballDirectNews.com understands. A source close to Stamford Bridge told FDN the Blues have assessed a number of potential targets for the summer transfer window and Uruguay international Cavani features prominently on the wishlist.
The Blues are determined to overhaul a misfiring strikeforce before the 2014-15 campaign gets under way, with a lack of goals from their forwards largely blamed for the absence of silverware in west London last term. Samuel Eto’o and particularly Fernando Torres failed to find consistent form in front of goal for Jose Mourinho’s team, while Demba Ba was restricted to a handful of appearances all season, many of which were cameos from the substitutes’ bench.
The club insider revealed Cavani has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time and they are encouraged by constant speculation in France that the forward is keen to embark on a fresh challenge in a different country.
He plundered 22 goals in 39 appearances for Laurent Blanc’s side last season.
The Blues are prepared to wait until after Uruguay’s World Cup campaign in Brazil comes to an end if necessary, before launching a bid to lure the 27-year-old to England.
