Sunderland hope to boost their strikeforce with the summer acquisition of Norwich City forward Luciano Becchio, [football] direct news understands. A source close to the Stadium of Light told FDN head coach Gus Poyet is a long-term admirer of the 30-year-old, who has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Carrow Road. Becchio has cut a dejected figure for much of his 16-month stay at the club, in stark contrast to his highly-successful stint at Championship club Leeds United which grabbed the attention of a string of Premier League scouts. His appearance in the 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, which proved to be manager Chris Hughton’s last match in charge prior to his sacking, was the striker’s first since January 18. The Argentine has made only six other appearances for the Canaries, four of which were top-flight games, and he is yet to find the back of the net. The Sunderland insider said an offer could be made once both clubs have discovered their fate in the battle against relegation.
