Barcelona could rival Manchester United for the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The long-serving German international is currently unsettled at the Allianz Arena after recent reports emerged that he was keen to leave this summer for a new challenge, and he is likely to have many suitors in the coming months.
The 29-year-old has been a terrific servant to the Bavarian giants, playing in a variety of midfield roles for the club to help them to seven Bundesliga titles and last season’s Champions League title in the club’s sensational treble-winning campaign. United have shown an interest in the player as they eye new signings in midfield, and Barcelona could also be in need of new players in that position as doubts grow over the future of Cesc Fabregas and others at the Nou Camp.
The Catalan giants are keen to undergo something of a squad overhaul under new manager Luis Enrique this summer, and big names such as Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal, both of Juventus, have already been linked as major targets to come in. Still, Schweinsteiger’s experience and proven quality could make him another high-calibre signing, and a European football insider believes Barca could make enquiries about him in the near future.
