Chelsea defender David Luiz is reportedly on a Barcelona shortlist of three possible replacements for the Catalan giants’ captain Carlos Puyol, who leaves at the end of the season. According to Portugese newspaper A Bola, the Brazil international is on the La Liga heavyweights’ radar alongside Borussia Dortmund hardman Mats Hummels and Porto’s rising star Eliaquim Mangala.Puyol, who made his senior debut for the club in 1999, has decided to depart the Nou Camp this summer and will embark on a new challenge elsewhere. Luiz has struggled to nail down a regular starting place at the heart of the Blues’ defence, not least because Gary Cahill and John Terry have formed a formidable partnership in front of goalkeeper Petr Cech. He has been used sparingly by boss Jose Mourinho who occasionally deploys the 26-year-old in a holding midfield role amid uncertainties over his concentration levels at centre-half, especially in the tougher fixtures. Luiz has more than three years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, leaving the west London club in a strong position to hold out for a large transfer fee.
