Arsenal are prepared to offer cash plus Mikel Arteta to La Liga side Athletic Bilbao in an attempt to lure midfielder Ander Herrera to north London, [football] direct news understands. The 24-year-old, who was the subject of a very public pursuit by champions Manchester United last summer, is high on the Gunners’ wishlist according to a club insider. A source close to the Emirates Stadium told FDN the Spaniard has been identified as the man to provide extra bite at the heart of an engine room which has often been depleted by injuries this term. Abou Diaby, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all been sidelined while Mathieu Flamini sustained a three-match ban. Veteran Arteta, who has little more than 12 months remaining on his contract, faces the prospect of falling further down the pecking order next term and, according to the source, may well be sacrificed in order to snap up a younger player in his position. Herrera currently has around two years left on his Bilbao deal.
