Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon admitted that he was impressed by Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Southampton which saw the Reds leapfrog his old side into second. Arsenal suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at Stoke City earlier in the day on Saturday, courtesy of a Jonathan Walters penalty, and, because of that, Liverpool knew going into the evening kick-off at Southampton that they would go into second with a win.
Brendan Rodgers’ side already knew that they would climb into third with a victory at the start of the day due to Manchester City’s involvement in the League Cup final with Sunderland, but the prospect of moving above the Gunners in the title race surely must have acted as an added incentive. Liverpool duly obliged with their first win at St Mary’s in over a decade after Luis Suarez ended his mini goal drought, along with a Raheem Sterling strike and a late Steven Gerrard penalty.

After the impressive win, Dixon praised Liverpool, who have firmly put themselves in the title race, writing on his official Twitter account: “Impressed with Liverpool today.

They knew they could go 2nd. Out played in1 st half. Playing a decent team. Bang 0-3 win. Impressive. ”
