Arsenal are the latest club to show an interest in Sevilla centre-back Federico Fazio, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The 27-year-old is fast becoming one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe at the moment, with Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool all linked with him in the last few months following a series of impressive displays.
The Argentine has been with Sevilla for his entire career so far since joining their youth team in 2007, but may now be heading for the exit door as his reputation improves with game to game. Arsenal are on the lookout for new defensive signings, and it appears that Fazio could now be their main target to come in and challenge Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for a place in the starting lineup.
Thomas Vermaelen seems likely to leave the Emirates Stadium in the summer, and will leave the Gunners short of depth in that position, though Fazio would certainly be an excellent replacement if Arsene Wenger can beat other top clubs to his signature.
There are already plans to improve defensively next season, an Arsenal source revealed. “Fazio is being linked with a lot of big teams and my understanding is that we’re interested too.
