Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri could be have a big opportunity to impress at this summer’s World Cup with national side Switzerland.
The 22-year-old was widely regarded as one of the most promising young players in Europe during his time at previous club FC Basel, but he has found first-team opportunities limited since his move to Bayern, where there are plenty of other world class midfield players to compete with. With Switzerland, Shaqiri can enjoy being the focal point of his side, with the skillful midfielder having established himself as an important player for his country, winning 30 caps since making his debut back in 2010. With a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, linked with Shaqiri in recent months, this could be an opportunity for the talented youngster to put himself in the shop window, and show what he can do on the biggest stage. In general, Switzerland look strong going into this summer’s tournament, with other talented young players like Granit Xhaka and Josip Drmic, blended with experienced pros such as Gokhan Inler and Valon Behrami.
The Swiss will also be hoping to provide a final hurrah for their legendary manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, a Champions League winner with both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, who will be retiring from the game after the tournament. With a relatively generous-looking group as well, Switzerland could be up there with Belgium as potential dark horses for the tournament, and if they do go far in Brazil it is likely that Shaqiri will play a major role in their success.
The likes of Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Schalke have also been linked with the player, but there also seems a good chance that he could be lining up for one of the big names in England next season.
