Bayern Munich will hope to ward off interest from Chelsea by offering hotshot Mario Mandzukic a new contract.
The Croatian has been the subject of intense speculation after Bayern Munich revealed Poland international Robert Lewandowski will be joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Bayern boss Pep Guardiola had Mandzukic on the bench for last night’s Champions League clash with Manchester United, with the player setting-up the equaliser when he came on. Chelsea are keen to sign a top striker in the summer and were looking to take advantage of the uncertainty at the German club. Their dearth of attackers has been highlighted by Jose Mourinho not starting with a recognised striker in the club’s Champions League quarter-final with Paris Saint Germain. But Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he expects the striker, who is the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 17 goals, to stay with the club.
There are no signals from his side that let me doubt that he wants to play at Bayern beyond the summer. And a look in his contract running until 2016 also leaves me sleep peacefully, he told Bild.
