Speculation is growing that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may be set to retire at the end of this season. According to an unofficial club blog Arsenal Action, the Frenchman was distrought following Saturday’s humiliating 6-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which looks to have all but ended the Gunners’ title hopes for the year.
The thrashing was unfortunate to come in Wenger’s 1000th match for the club, and although the pre-match buildup was in full praise of the Arsenal boss, he has come under scrutiny again as his side look set for another disappointing season. It is now being claimed that Wenger informed the players of his decision in the dressing room after the game, and the club have issued something of a media blackout since then, which has only fuelled the rumours further.
The 64-year-old is currently the longest serving manager in the Premier League by quite a distance, following the retirement of another legendary figure last summer, as Sir Alex Ferguson called time on 27 years at Manchester United.

While Ferguson went out on a high at Old Trafford, it seems as though it is this latest low at the hands of Chelsea that has persuaded Wenger that he has taken Arsenal as far as he can. The board are said to be hoping to persuade him to change his mind.
