Manchester United veteran Rio Ferdinand has admitted that the Red Devils need the passionate support they witnessed at Old Trafford in the 3-0 Champions League win over Olympiacos.
The hosts progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition after overturning the 2-0 deficit from the first leg, and the home faithful once again made their voices heard last night. Despite a torrid campaign which has seen the champions languished way off the title race and even a top-four spot and crash out of both domestic cup competitions, their fans have hit the headlines with their backing, which reached fever pitch levels in Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool. Ferdinand, who is widely-expected to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, helped his side keep a clean sheet against the Greek outfit last night and urged United’s supporters to keep playing their part.
He said on Twitter: “Results haven’t been what we all want at #mufc lately but the support has been immense, we feel and need that support to pass the difficult times. ”United will discover their last-eight opponents in tomorrow’s Champions League draw.
