Tottenham Hotspur could be set to rival the likes of Arsenal for the signing of Lyon star Yoann Gourcuff, FootballDirectNews.com understands.
The 27-year-old attacking midfielder has long been linked with a move to the Gunners throughout his career, and there was also reported interest from Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United in the January transfer window this year. Gourcuff has performed well for Lyon since joining the club from Bordeaux in 2010, though he has often been seen as something of an under-achiever for much of his career, since failing to make the grade as a youngster at AC Milan. Still, his displays this season look to have attracted interest from Tottenham, who are keen to revamp their struggling squad for next season to improve their bid for a top four place.
The club spent heavily on attacking players such as Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado this season, though a number of players could be set for quick exits from the club after badly failing to live up to their price tags. I think the plan is to sell one or two of the attacking players that haven’t impressed, a White Hart Lane insider said. “Gourcuff is then one of the players being mentioned as a replacement, but of course there are other top clubs after him as well. “
