Tottenham: Barca monitor unsettled Vertonghen
27th November 2013 1:20pm GMT
Barcelona are monitoring Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen and may make a move for the Belgium star in January.
The Catalan giants remain keen to bolster their defence, having failed to land a defensive player in the summer.
Vertonghen was on Gerardo Martino’s shortlist during the last transfer window, but no approach was made, with Liverpool’s Daniel Agger, Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva and Chelsea’s David Luiz seen as more attainable targets.
However, with the 26-year-old expressing his dissatisfaction at often being played out of position by Spurs, Barca have rekindled their interest.
Boss Andre Villas-Boas has often deployed Vertonghen at left-back in the absence of Danny Rose.
He was again played there at the weekend as Spurs were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City – despite his protestations in the build-up to the Etihad Stadium clash.
Following the game, Vertonghen insisted there was no rift between the squad and Villas-Boas, but SportsDirect News understands he would be open to a January exit.
Spurs chief Daniel Levy will drive a hard bargain, however, and is likely to demand in excess of £20 million for the player he signed for £8m in 2012.
