Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is set to go toe-to-toe with David Moyes, his counterpart at Manchester United, to sign Joleon Lescott in January.

The Newcastle boss wants to shore up his leaky defence with the addition of the want-away Manchester City centre half who now faces the return of Vincent Kompany as further competition for a place in Manuel Pellegrini’s selection.

Conceding goals is, currently, Pardew’s biggest concern this season in the Premier League. The only teams in the league that have conceded more goals are four that are rooted in the bottom five; Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Norwich City.

Lescott ticks as many boxes for Pardew as he does for Moyes but there is one added bonus. With a squad that would arguably be more at home in French Ligue 1 the United manager has declared his stated attention to add a British factor to his recruitment policy.

With well over 200 Premier League appearances to go with his 26 England caps the Birmingham-born centre back is more than qualified.

It just remains to be seen which United he favours, red or stripes.
