Nani crucial for Man Utd - as a makeweight
26th November 2013 12:23pm GMT
With his future at Manchester United very uncertain the Portuguese winger Nani may see his importance grow as United will look to use him for his Portuguese connection to bring in a player more likely to contribute to the team.
That replacement, although not like for like, is William Carvalho, of Sporting Lisbon.
At just 21 the strong, robust midfielder is exactly what United are lacking at present. He won his first cap for Portugal in the recent second leg World Cup play-off against Sweden.
Nominally a defensive midfielder Carvalho has a good short and long passing game and unlike most of the current United midfield contingent he is good in the air.
Nani would jump at the prospect of returning to Portugal where playing more regularly would ensure his place in the national team for Brazil.
The major difficulty United will face is a battle with Chelsea and Juventus for the player and the reported £35 million release clause rumoured to be part of his current contract.
Carvalho, according to the word in Portugal, would see his chances of making the World Cup better at Old Trafford or Turin where the competition for places does not have the depth Chelsea have.
