Valencia to rival Stoke for Agudelo
22nd November 2013 4:50pm GMT
Valencia are set to ruin Stoke City’s plans to revive their bid to sign Juan Agudelo in the summer.
Stoke failed in their bid to sign the 20-year-old USA international from New England Revolution when he was refused a work permit.
But there is a chance manager Mark Hughes could revive his interest in the player at the end of the season.
Hughes thought he had his man when a deal was agreed to take Agudelo to Stoke on 1 January.
But when his permit was denied, Stoke were forced into a rethink.
They may resubmit their application for a permit and hope they are successful with a second attempt.
But a host of clubs in Europe have been monitoring the situation and are now ready to take the player from Stoke’s clutches.
Valencia are favourites to sign Agudelo and that will only frustrate Hughes further.
Hughes wants a proven goalscorer but has faced hurdles every time.
Clubs from France, Portugal and Holland are also interested in Agudelo and it is likely that he will be snapped up in the transfer window to end Hughes’ interest.
Now Hughes will look at Mame Biram Diouf of Hannover, Manchester City’s John Guidetti, Shane Long at West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur’s Jermain Defoe when the window opens.
