West Ham push for Maiga sale
23rd October 2013 1:49pm BST
West Ham United are confident that French club Saint Etienne will make a bid for flopped striker Modibo Maiga in the January transfer window.
Maiga has been bitterly disappointing since joining West Ham in a 2012 transfer worth £5 millon and is now totally out of the pecking order.
Since seeing the striker fail miserably over the early games of the campaign, manager Sam Allardyce has gone with a strikerless formation - a situation which will no doubt be repeated at Swansea City on Sunday.
However, despite his recent poor showings Madiga is still attracting interest from France, where Saint Etienne are ready to pay around £1.5m for the player.
That, plus the loss of Maiga's £30,000 a week wages, would be enough to convince West Ham to do a deal, given that they need to fall in line with strict financial fair play and Premier League regulations.
Allardyce will have Andy Carroll back within five weeks and, with newly signed strikers Carlton Cole and Mladen Petric on board, is ready to let Maiga go.
A source told SportsDirect News exclusively: "There's interest from France and St Etienne remain interested at the right price. We realise we will have to take a hit on Modibo."
