Abramovich ally in Vitesse buyout
22nd October 2013 3:42pm BST
Alexander Chigirinskiy, a Russian businessman and close friend of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, has purchased a controlling stake in Eredivise club Vitesse Arnhem.
Chigirinskiy completed a transfer of shares from previous owner Merab Jordania, who he had partnered in a 2010 takeover deal that ended years of financial uncertainty at Vitesse.
Jordania, previously manager of the Georgia national team, became the first ever foreign owner of a Dutch football club.
Vitesse then struck up a partnership agreement with Chelsea, whose owner Abramovich has good relations with both Jordania and Chigirinskiy.
Several young Chelsea players have since passed through Vitesse on loan, and the current crop of Blues prospects in Arnhem include attacking midfielder Lucas Piazon and winger Gael Kakuta.
Piazon, 19, has scored five goals in eight league games for Vitesse this season, including two in the 3-2 defeat of Heerenveen on Saturday.
Midfielder Marco van Ginkel also joined Chelsea in an £8 million transfer from Vitesse this summer, but has since suffered a cruciate ligament injury that is expected to rule him out for the next five months.
