Legend Bonds: 'Morrison must listen and learn'
15th October 2013 4:44pm BST
West Ham United legend Billy Bonds has handed new Upton Park sensation Ravel Morrison a word of advice: "Listen, learn, take notice and you will make it to the top."
Morrison could start right there as there are few better equipped to be offering a word of two than Bonds whose West Ham career as a player and manager stretched over 27 years
The 20-year-old midfielder looks likely to start in tonight's England under-21 international against Lithuania at Portman Road with a reputation already stretching far outside the east end of London.
That's where the problems may start according to Bonds who said: "He's only played five games at Premier League level and he is being described as the new great hope of English football.
"I've seen many young players come and go but it's clear the lad has loads of ability and can do the unusual."
Like everybody else who has witnessed it, Bonds was thrilled with Morrison's effort against Spurs last Sunday when he ran fully 40 yards shaking off the attentions of challengers all the way before chipping a beautiful solo goal.
That brought him to the attention of the public at large and he went on to produce a fine performance for the Under-21s against San Marino.
Bond believes West Ham have done a great job in developing a player who clearly had his problems at Manchester United but says he has to listen and learn whilst keeping his focus.
He said: "His goal over there was sensational. His ability is obvious but it's about more than that and we have to be careful not to push him too fast.
"Our problem in this country is that because we don't prduce that many great youngsters we hype them up much faster than we should.
"Ravel has had his problems. I understand Alex (Ferguson) couldn't work it out with him and told Sam Allardyce if he could he'd have a great player on his hands.
"It looks as though he's listening because his early performances have been great but he needs to listen and learn - there's a way to go."
