Man City news: Goater in line for coaching role
14th October 2013 9:33am BST
Manchester City have earmarked club legend Shaun Goater for a coaching role at the club.
The former Bermuda international is in the process of completing his badges and has been linked with taking charge at City's feeder club, Hyde FC, should current manager Scott McNiven depart after failing to garner a win this season.
Goater is still highly thought of at the Etihad Stadium and in the corridors of power there is a determination to not only keep faith with players who rose through the youth ranks, like Micah Richards, but also honour links to the history and culture of the club, which is where the 43-year-old comes in.
A City source said: "Shaun is adored by fans and staff alike at City and flies here to attend matches whenever possible.
"He has always been semi-involved with ambassadorial and publicity roles here but now he has expressed an interest in coaching, City are very keen to get him on board because he is a significant part of the club's history.
"Everyone knows that he played a key role in getting City back into the big time but it wasn't just his goals that made him popular, it was his strength of character. He struggled in a big way when he first arrived at Maine Road and the fans couldn't stand him. But he worked his socks off and the goals wouldn't have come without that never-say-die attitude.
"Looking ahead, there are several options. He could start off as a lower-league or non-league manager and climb the ladder, or he could come into a coaching role at City."
Goater has recently spent more time in the UK to watch non-league matches in the North-West and his move into coaching could take place before the new year.
