Arsenal and Chelsea "to go all out" for Benteke
19th August 2013 2:45pm BST
Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to go head to head in the race to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Belgium international striker scored two goals on the opening day of the Premier League season on Saturday as Villa beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis signalled the club would finance the signing of several top players this summer, but has since missed out on targets Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo.
Following the home loss to Villa, Gunners fan group Where Have Our Arsenal Gone wrote an open letter to Gazidis branding the club's failed transfer dealings “a disgrace”.
Arsene Wenger is believed to have made the acquisition of a forward to partner Olivier Giroud a priority.
Chelsea meanwhile, with Fernando Torres and Lukaku on the books, may not consider the addition of another striker a matter of such urgency.
However, Blues boss Jose Mourinho has nonetheless stated he is determined to bring in another forward before the deadline day of 2 September.
If a bidding war for Benteke were to break out then Arsenal, responding to recent fans' criticism and with disappointment in the transfer market fresh in the mind, would be expected to go all out for the player.
Benteke scored 19 goals in 34 games for Villa last season.
