Transfer news: Suarez to cost £78m
30th July 2013 4:30pm BST
Arsenal and Chelsea will have to come up with a jaw-dropping package worth £78 million if they are to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
Arsenal have already had one bid worth just over £40m rejected by the Reds – as they value their star at £50m.
Should the Gunners or the Blues match the Anfield club’s asking price they will then have to fork out up to £150,000-a-week over the four years of Suarez’s likely contract.
The Uruguayan’s salary demands, should he see out his deal, would eventually tally up to £28m – taking the overall transfer fee to just under £80m.
And the numbers are likely to work in the Blues’ favour.
SportsDirect News revealed on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho had identified the star as a potential alternative to Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, and the Portuguese tactician would have no problem in splashing the cash on Suarez.
Arsenal, on the other hand, would have to smash both their wage structure and their record transfer fee to land the striker – and it remains to be seen if famously stingy boss Arsene Wenger will match both Liverpool’s asking price and the player’s salary demands.
