Liverpool transfer news: “New Suarez" deal off
15th July 2013 12:30pm BST
Liverpool have missed out on the signing of Uruguayan striker Nicolas Lopez, who has joined Serie A Side Udinese in a £850,000 deal with AS Roma.
Lopez, 19, scored four goals at the Fifa U20 World Cup in Turkey with Uruguay, where his side reached Saturday's final only to lose out 4-1 on penalties to France.
The player's pace, technique and agility in the box, combined with a predatory instinct for finding the back of the net, has drawn comparisons with fellow countryman and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
It had been reported the Anfield club were one of several sides keeping tabs on Lopez's in Turkey and were considering a move for the player in the event of a Suarez departure.
Now Lopez has returned from international duty, Serie A side Udinese have stolen in with one of the transfer coups of the summer so far by snatching him from under the noses of top European sides.
The transfer is to go through as part of the £11.5 million deal that sees Moroccan international defender Mehdi Benatia go in the opposite direction to sign up with Roma.
Liverpool, meanwhile, despite still being opposed to a Suarez sale, are expected to now look elsewhere to boost their attacking lineup.
Developments in the protracted Suarez saga are expected to occur once the want-away player returns to Anfield from an extended break following the Confederations Cup in Brazil.
