Spurs transfers: AVB wants Vertonghen clone
2nd July 2013 10:46am BST
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has had scouts watching Zenit St Petersburg’s Nicolas Lombaerts, dubbed a clone of current Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen.
The Portuguese coach is looking to build a squad capable of qualifying for the Champions League this season having seen his club miss out on the top four to north London rivals Arsenal last term.
Villas-Boas released veteran defender William Gallas earlier this summer and is now looking to add to his defensive options with the future of left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto also uncertain.
Lombaerts has been identified by AVB as an ideal addition to the Spurs squad as not only is he competent in the centre of defence but can also cover at left full-back (just like his compatriot Vertonghen) and SportsDirect News understands the Tottenham boss has been monitoring his situation in Russia.
The 28-year-old left-footed defender enters the last year of his contract at Zenit this season and the Russian club will have to sell the Belgian international this summer to avoid him leaving for a free in 2014.
