Man Utd news: Strootman to sign "on 1 July"
24th June 2013 10:49am BST
Kevin Strootman could become the first marquee signing of the David Moyes era at Manchester United, as the club's bid to bring Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Old Trafford stalls.
Strootman, a long-term United target, finally convinced the Manchester side to push ahead for his signature after impressing club scouts watching his Netherlands side at the U21 European Championships in Israel this summer.
United negotiators are expected to step up their pursuit of the player this week, with a view to a deal being completed on 1 July, when the transfer window opens, SportsDirect News understands.
It had been reported that Spain U21 attacking midfielder Thiago, who also put in some impressive performances in Israel, including a sensational hat-trick in his country's 4-2 victory over Italy in the final, had already agreed personal terms with United.
The Manchester side are believed to have offered the player an annual salary of £5 million, three times what Thiago currently earns at Barca.
However, the player is understood to since have had a change of heart and may yet stay at the Nou Camp next year, so long as he is given assurances over first-team opportunities.
With that in mind, United are expected to make their Strootman chase a priority, SportsDirect News has learned.
The deal for the Dutch international is understood to be worth between £15-20m to the player's current club PSV.
The Eredivisie side are believed to be ready to cash in on a player they bought as part of a £10m double deal with FC Utrecht in 2011 that also saw Belgian international Dries Mertens make the move to Eindhoven.
Mertens is also close to a transfer away from the club this summer.
After the player succesfuly passed a medical with Serie A side Napoli, an £8m deal is expected to be completed over the coming days.
