Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo wants team-mate Xabi Alonso to stay at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos beat Celta Vigo at home on Monday (6 January). Karim Benzema got the opening goal in the67th minute, then two late goals from Ronaldo – in the 82nd and 92nd minutes – finished off the opposition but the future of the midfielder still hangs in the balance with a number of clubs, including both Manchester United and City reportedly interested in the 32-year-old Spain international.

While Alonso has reiterated his desire to stay in Madrid talks over a new contract with the club appear to have stalled.

However Ronaldo wants the playmaker to stay with the side, speaking after the game, he said: "That's a messy situation which the president has to deal with, I don't want to know about it. But there's always a solution to every situation. Death is the only thing for which there is no solution. He's 32, there's nothing I can tell him. But I hope he stays with us."

Real are currently third in La Liga, behind Atletico Madrid with Barcelona currently topping the table and Ronaldo has set his immediate task to overtake their city rivals. He added: "They are ahead of us. We need to do better and keep fighting. It's a long season, but we want to get close to them and overtake them. Let's see if we can. I have no preference with regards to the result. It would be great if they drop points, but we need to win our games, that's our job."
